What type of wireless do I need?

I spend a lot of time working with people who want wireless capabilities. I have also discovered that many people are a bit fuzzy on the various types of wireless capabilities, so I thought I would hit the highlights for you and talk about Bluetooth, Wireless Lan’s, and Wireless Broadband.

Bluetooth – Bluetooth connects devices quickly and easily, without wires or complex gear. It has a range of up to 328 feet, and is used for low bandwidth tasks. The most popular Bluetooth accessory is a wireless headset for your cell phone. It uses Bluetooth technology to allow the sound to travel between the headset and the phone.

Wireless Lan – Network your office and move around while you’re in the office, staying connected the whole time. The bandwidth will be high, as capable as a traditional Local Area Network. Wireless Lan’s have a range of anywhere from 100 to 300 feet.

Wireless Broadband – Stay connected virtually anytime, anywhere, without having to hunt for hotspots or pay access fees. The bandwidth is more of a midrange, and not really useful for transferring large files. The range is limited only by the capabilities of your cell phone signal strength.

So, there you have it. Wireless defined.
